Why tool-free maintenance halves the lifetime cost of industrial lighting

2026-10-11

Where the money really goes

In a plant with 400 high bays at 12 m, replacing a single driver costs the price of the part — plus a scaffold or a lift, two fitters and a permit-to-work. The labour and access cost is routinely five to ten times the component cost.

Design decisions that cut cost

  • Rear-cover driver access — Little Skinny street lights open with a knob; no crane, no lens removal.
  • Drawer-style core — Golden Cudgel drivers and LED modules slide out; the fitting stays mounted.
  • Compression-latch front covers — PangDun opens without tools, so a technician with a ladder finishes in minutes.
  • Shared spare parts — one driver family across several series means a smaller spare inventory and faster repairs.

A worked example

A 400-fitting warehouse with 3 % annual driver failure: with conventional access, each replacement consumes roughly 90 minutes of two-person labour plus access equipment. With tool-free access the same job is about 20 minutes for one person. Over a ten-year life the difference typically exceeds the cost of the luminaires themselves.

What to ask your supplier

Before you compare prices, ask how the driver is replaced, whether the LED module is field-serviceable and whether spare parts are shared across the range. Those three answers predict your maintenance budget better than the datasheet does.
